Share Kai in Solidarity
Providing manaakitanga (care) to affected families and fundraising opportunities in response to devastating events.
We partner with our local Palestinian and Ukrainian communities to host fundraising dinners with all proceeds sent to support humanitarian aid in Palestine and Ukraine.
We all need to feel like we matter. This is especially important in times of trouble and disaster. Having our pain recognised and knowing that what we’re going through matters to others helps us get through.
Our Share Kai in Solidarity events are an invitation to the wider community to show up for those whose families, friends and home countries are experiencing devastation and conflict.
To date we have hosted seven dinners for Palestine and three dinners for Ukraine in partnership with local communities. That's more than $35,000 raised, and importantly more than 1,000 diners who have shown up, sat down and shared a meal together.
These events are made possible by our partnerships with local places of worship who host these events.
See more about our next dinner on our ‘upcoming events‘ page.
Share Kai in Solidarity with Ukraine
Share Kai partners with the Ukrainian Association of the South Island to host events celebrating the food and culture of Ukraine.
Ukrainian chefs and family members cook traditional Ukrainian food, a cappella group sings Ukrainian folk songs and all funds raised are sent to support humanitarian aid in Ukraine.
Ngā mihi/thank you to Cashmere Presbyterian Church and St Barnabas Church for hosting our Share Kai in Solidarity with Ukraine events.
Share Kai in Solidarity with Palestine
We partner with All for a Free Palestine and other local fundraisers for Palestine to share a three course dinner and an opportunity to connect. All proceeds raised are sent to families in Gaza to meet basic humanitarian needs.
Ngā mihi/thank you to St Barnabas Church, Upper Riccarton Methodist Church, and Risingholme Hall for hosting our events.
“I am so happy seeing all these
people here, to support us. Eating our
food. I don’t feel so alone with this pain.”
Share Kai in Solidarity with the Muslim Community
The Coronial Inquiry into the 15 March 2019 Ōtautahi Christchurch masjidain attacks ran for 8 weeks between October and December 2023.
During this time approximately 600 family members of families directly affected visited Ōtautahi Christchurch to attend court proceedings and to support family members.
The outpouring of compassion and unity shown following the events on 15 March 2019 was something that gave many strength in the days and weeks that followed. We wanted to enable members of Aotearoa to again show manaakitanga (care) to our Muslim whānau during the difficult court proceedings.
Donations were collected by Share Kai that enabled us to host a weekly Share Kai meal for members of the Muslim community over the course of four weeks during the Coronial Inquiry. In total more than 650 meals were made and a space was created where our Muslim whānau could gather and be together.
