Bridging Cultures with Tāhono Trust

In 2024 we met the lovely Atarau and Staughm from Tāhono Trust, and after many kawhe/coffees our team have began a learning journey about the land on which we stand (tūrangawaewae), and the rights of which we get to stand here under Te Tiriti o Waitangi.

Through this mahi, we’re exploring what it means to build authentic belonging in Ōtautahi, through our work and in our own lives.

We started with a day together in winter at Rāpaki Marae, hearing stories from mana whenua about their whakapapa and their relationship to the whenua. We did what we do best, coming together to share stories and knowledge and build connections through kai and kōrero.

This trip was the first step in an ongoing journey for our Share Kai Cooks Collective and InCommon team. We've since returned to Rāpaki, together and separately, getting involved in local activities or simply to connect with the land. Last month the Cooks Collective and InCommon team cooked for a shared lunch with the kaumatua and staff of Rāpaki, to show our gratitude to the Marae for opening their doors and sharing their knowledge with us. It was a new experience for some to try injera (Eritrean sourdough), Afghan curry and Nepali dumplings - and there were seconds all round!

Lead by Atarau, our team are participating in hui exploring the concepts of tūrangawaewae, tikanga and Te Tiriti o Waitangi. Our journey as tauiwi is ongoing, and we look forward to continuing learning and growing in these spaces as Tangata Tiriti.

A big mihi Tāhono Trust for their expertise and guidance and to Rātā Foundation for funding this partnership and body of work.
