Team stories: Husna

I was born in Eritrea and lived as a refugee in Sudan for 40 years, where my four sons were born.

I came to Christchurch nearly 20 years ago with my boys. I love Christchurch, even when the earthquakes happened [in 2010/2011] and some people from my community moved away and said I should go - I didn’t. I stayed. This is my home.

I love to cook injera (the traditional Eritrean sourdough flatbread) and I love eating any dish with chicken in it! I always like to eat meat.

My biggest learning at Share Kai has been serving individual portions and cooking for a set number of servings. In our community people eat from the same shared plate and we always just cook a lot! We don’t ever want anyone to miss out.

I love seeing people sharing a tasting plate at Share Kai events, eating from the same plate together like her community. This makes me happy, seeing people learning about Eritrea and liking our food.
